Mumbai News Today Live, Shiv Sena News: Bombay High Court on Friday acquitted former Delhi University professor G N Saibaba in alleged Maoist links case and allowed his appeal against conviction and life sentence, news agency PTI reported. The court also ordered his immediate release from jail. A division bench of Justice Rohit Deo and Anil Pansare allowed the appeal filed by Saibaba challenging a 2017 order of the trial court convicting him and sentencing him to life imprisonment.

Saibaba, who is wheelchair-bound due to a physical disability, is currently lodged at the Nagpur central prison. The bench also allowed the appeal of five other convicts in the case and acquitted them. One of the five died pending hearing of the appeal. The bench directed for the convicts to be released forthwith from jail unless they are accused in any other case.

In other news, the Bombay High Court on Thursday pulled up the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) asking it to issue a letter of acceptance to the resignation of Rutuja Latke, the proposed candidate of the Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray party for the Andheri (East) bypoll. The HC decision was yet another setback to the civic body, which has earned the courts’ wrath on several occasions in the recent past for what has been deemed as “mala fide” conduct favouring the ruling dispensation.

Criminal cases have been registered against seven leaders from the Uddhav Thackeray camp of the Shiv Sena for allegedly making ‘offensive statements’ against Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a rally.
