Speeding dumper knocks down, kills traffic cop in Mumbai – Times of India

MUMBAI: A 40-year-old traffic police constable was killed and a traffic warden was injured in a hit-and-run on the Western Express Highway at Goregaon East on Tuesday. A dumper rammed into the cop’s scooter and the driver fled. He was arrested by the Vanrai police late on Tuesday.
Constable Pandurang Sakpal was attached to the Dindoshi traffic division for the past two years. He lived in Kandivali.
Around 2.30pm, he was riding a scooter near Hub Mall when a dumper moved past the two-wheeler from its left side and ended up ramming it. The warden, identified only as Pitale, 32, was seated pillion and the impact resulted in him getting flung onto the road. The dumper driver abandoned his vehicle and escaped without taking the duo to a doctor.
After the Vanrai police learnt of the accident, Sakpal and Pitale were rushed to the Holy Spirit Hospital in Andheri. Doctors declared Sakpal dead before admission to the hospital.
“We seized the dumper and tracked down its owner on the basis of the vehicle’s registration number,” said DCP DS Swami. Through the owner, the police tracked down the driver, Munnakumar Chauhan, 31. He was booked under section 304 (A) of IPC for ‘causing death due to negligence’ and was formally arrested.
Pitale was treated at the hospital and discharged. Sakpal’s body was sent for an autopsy. His family was informed by the Vanrai police and were inconsolable.
