Metro operations on the entire length of the Line 2A and 7 routes began on a promising note on Friday with excited commuters queuing up at the booking counters to travel by the first services that started at 4pm from Gundavali station on the Western Express Highway. PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the Metro services on Thursday and commercial operations began a day later on the 35km Gundavali Dahisar-Andheri West stretch. There was a constant trickle of people at Gundavali station of Metro Line 7 and Andheri West on the 2A line. Both these stations have an interchange facility with Metro Line 1’s Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar line. An MMRDA official said, “Within the first hour, nearly 700 tickets were sold at each of these stations. Almost 95% of the users were genuine travellers and not those who had come for a joyride. ” MMRDA plans to run 236 services on this route, of which 50 each will be during the morning and evening peak hours at a frequency of 8 minutes. MMRDA has 28 rakes in its fleet but it has pressed 21 into service, with the remainder on standby for maintenance purposes. The official said the frequency will improve as and when demand increases.
