Mumbai: Mumbai Metro has been adopting various measures to ensure last-mile connectivity to its commuters. As part of it, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is planning to link the Metro rail network with crowded office buildings, shopping malls, large housing societies and other public hubs.
According to the metropolitan commissioner of MMRDA, SVR Srinivas, the first such facilities will be coming up at Oberoi Mall and NESCO Goregaon. The authorities are finalising the plans to launch the project.

The Metro stations will be connected to these nearby buildings through skywalks or travelators and the passengers can walk in easily without any hurdles. This is also expected to help ease the roads near residential complexes, offices and commercial centres.

There are several residential complexes, malls and offices near the Metro lines including the recently inaugurated Lines 2A and 7.

Meanwhile, many residents in the city welcomed the decision. “This is a great initiative and will surely help thousands of people in the city. Though the offices and malls are closer to Metro stations, reaching them is tiresome. During the morning and evening, many roads in the city often get choked because of the rush of people heading to metro stations. Hope all these issued will be addressed now,” a Mumbai resident Gauri Patil said.

However, some others pointed out the authorities should have planned these facilities during the construction of the stations.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also launched the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) in Mumbai. These mobility cards ensure swifter, contactless digital ticket purchases at Metro stations. NCMS cards, an inter-system transport card nationally launched in 2019 under the ‘One Nation One Card’ initiative, can be displayed at metro station entry gates and it supports digital payment to purchase tickets through UPI.

Prime minister also launched a mobile application called Mumbai 1 which will have details regarding the city’s metro services.
