MUMBAI: In a major embarrassment for the Customs, an Azerbaijan national who was caught at the Mumbai International airport flying with 3 kg gold dust worth Rs 1. 50 crore from Dubai on Tuesday, was found in possession of another 700 grams of the gold dust hidden in his pant’s pocket by the jail officials on Thursday.
The accused, Mahir Aliyev, was produced before the local court which remanded him to judicial custody. On Thursday, when he was taken to Arthur Road Jail, jail constable carried out a thorough check and found another 700 grams of gold dust hidden inside his pant’s pocket.
“He alerted us and we did a proper panchnama of the seizure and informed the NM Joshi Marg police. It was the case of customs and hence the seized gold dust was handed over to them,” said Nitin Vaychal, superintendent of Arthur Road Jail. Customs officials declined to comment.
