Spate of suspensions stirring a quiet revolution – Times of India

Ahmednagar, the hometown of political arch-rivals Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, state revenue minister, and Balasaheb Thorat, Congress legislature party leader, is witnessing a quiet revolution. The township witnessed huge processions over suspension of officials. In fact, it was for the first time in the recent past that people took to streets to protest suspension of official on the ground that they were victims of political rivalry between NCP and BJP leaders. A few days after a morcha against suspension of a senior police official over allegations that he was acting casually over complaint of inter-faith dispute, another morcha was taken out after Vikhe Patil announced suspension of SDO Ajit Thorbole and tehsildar Nana Agale. BJP legislator Ram Shinde had alleged that the two were supporting illegal excavation activities in Karjat tehsil. Vikhe announced that divisional commissioner has been asked to conduct an in-depth probe and submit report within a month. According to NCP leaders, both Thorbole and Agale are being victimised as they were close to NCP legislator Rohit Pawar.
ACB’s big catch: For Palghar anti-corruption bureau, led by SP Sunil Lokhande and additional SP Anil Ghardikar, it was a prized catch when they trapped high ranking officials of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company. It was a unique case wherein high-ranking engineers were demanding money from their own subordinate staff for closing a case against him. A week ago, a junior engineer knocked at the doors of Palghar ACB, alleging executive engineer Pratap Machiye was demanding Rs 2 lakh on behalf of superintending engineer Kiran Harish Nagavkar for winding up a case against him. During negotiations, the amount was settled at Rs 1.5 lakh, and the first instalment of Rs 1 lakh was to be handed over immediately. ACB sleuths decided to lay a trap for the erring officers. An offence under the prevention of corruption Act has been registered against Machiye and Nagavkar and accordingly a confidential report has been submitted to the MSEDCL managing director and energy secretary. ACB officials expect both to be suspended soon.
