MUMBAI: Cracking a murder conspiracy with alleged underworld links, the city police have arrested a 39-year-old contract killer who allegedly took Rs 3.5 lakh to kill a South Mumbai-based businessman on behalf of his Dubai-based partner over a financial dispute.
The anti-extortion cell of the Mumbai police has arrested one Kaushik Kohli under relevant sections of the IPC for attempt to murder, issuing threat and criminal conspiracy.
Police said the victim, businessman Chetan Bhende, lodged a complaint with the Gamdevi police last week, claiming unknown persons had arrived in an Innova car and waited outside his building. They later entered the premises, did a recce, and passed gestures pointing towards his flat before leaving, claimed Bhende. The entire sequence has been caught in a CCTV camera. “Since the matter was serious, the case was handed over to the crime branch. Based on the CCTV footage, we identified the car, traced it to Kohli and detained him,” said an officer
During the course of interrogation, Kohli said his Dubai-based friend Bhupesh Kamble had given him a contract of Rs 3.5 lakh to fire at the victim and threaten him. Kohli said he had assured Kamble that he will take the help of Chhota Rajan-aide D K Roa and finish the job. When police questioned Bhende, the businessman said that in 2021, he had started a fitness gym in Dubai and Kamble was a 40% partner. But over the course of time, he learnt that Kamble was misappropriating funds.
Bhende then asked his manager Mustafa to inform Kamble that he wanted to suspend the partnership. Enraged over this, Kamble threatened the businessman with dire consequences, and when he stopped taking calls, Kamble asked Kohli to take the help of a politician or a noted criminal to pressure Bhende.
