Mumbai: Four assault, rob man on Virar station escalator; 2 held – Times of India

MUMBAI: A 37-year-old man was assaulted and robbed on a moving escalator at Virar station by four co-passengers in the wee hours of Sunday. Based on CCTV footage , Vasai Government Railway Police identified the robbers and arrested two of them—Shahrukh Khan (19) and Kiran Karva (19)—on Wednesday from Charni Road station. A search is on for their two accomplices.
Virar resident Sachin Pawar, who works with a private firm, often takes the last train home from Andheri station. On Sunday, around 1. 35am, he boarded the luggage coach. When the train pulled into platform 3 at Virar station, Pawar and the four accused, who were then the only people in the coach, alighted. As they walked towards the escalator on the Churchgate end, they tried to engage Pawar in a conversation.

The CCTV footage showed one of the men trying to rob Pawar, while the other three get on to the escalator. As they land on the bridge, their accomplice is seen pushing Pawar onto the escalator and then kicking and punching him. When the escalator reaches the bridge, the other three join in. They then snatch Pawar’s gold chain and cellphone and flee. Pawar approached Vasai GRP, who examined the CCTV footage in which the men’s faces are visible. After going through CCTV images across the suburban rail network, they found that the men had boarded the train at Marine Lines. Police said they frequented Kamathipura in Charni Road. Khan, who has a theft case against him at V P Road police station, lives in Virar, and Karva in a Juhu hutment.
