Mumbai: ‘Don’t fall for fake food offers online’ – Times of India

MUMBAI: The cyber police at the Bandra Kurla Complex has warned people not to fall victim to fraudulent food offer advertisements that are posted on Facebook and other social media platforms. The offer posted online claims, “Buy 1 Thali Get 2 Thali free in your first order” and comes with the fraudster’s contact number, “9883812775”.
The cyber police have already received several complaints of those who lost money after clicking on the link supposedly to book the order, and then submitting bank account details.
These ads have been posted on behalf of five known restaurants in Mumbai and one in Pune, as many are ordering in to celebrate at home due to the night curfew restrictions.
“The fraudster targets victims by using names of familiar restaurants.” said Cyber DCP Rashmi Karandikar.
Once the victim calls, the fraudster sends a link asking the caller to pay Rs 10 to book the order and fill up a form with bank details. Once submitted, money is fraudulently transferred from the account.
