The crime branch has also booked 33 employees of these call centres, including six women, under IPC section of (188) Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servants and handed over them to the Malad and Bangur Nagar police stations.
The Crime intelligence Unit and unit 11 Inspector Sunil Mane and assistant inspector Sachin Waze had on September 12 raided five call centres in Marve in Malad and arrested more than 112 persons including six proprietors of these call centres where the accused used to impersonate officials from the Internal Revenue Services (IRS) and under the pretext of settlement of pending dues, used to dupe US Nationals and Canada citizen tunes to several lakhs.
During interrogation, the police got information of these fresh call centres active in the suburbs. “Based on information on Friday night, we raided these two call centres at Malad and Goregaon and arrested three partners — Afzal Kravale, Zaheer Kravle and Rohan Bhalerao,” said Sunil Mane, police inspector.
Later, the police arrested Akshay Rahalkar, a key facilitator who had accounts in the US and used them to transfer money from the US to India.
The police said that they are also looking for one Ranjit Indalkar who had been arrested by Pune Anti Narcotic Cell recently with 20 kg of mephedrone.
Police said that the call centre officials posed as officials of the US revenue intelligence department, called up American nationals to “settle dues on the spot” and then asked them to purchase gift cards. The accused then encashed these gift cards. The police said that some call centres even used to supply sex boosters.
Police have seized laptops, servers, computers, mobile phones and incriminating documents including invoices and scripts from the call centres.
