2011 Mumbai blasts accused set to join Maharashtra Bar Council – Times of India

MUMBAI: In custody for over a decade in the 2011 Mumbai triple blast case, accused Nadeem Akhtar has been granted permission by the special trial court to apply for membership of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and to delegate an authority letter on his behalf by his cousin. Akhtar competed his LLB degree from Mumbai University while in custody.
In its reply, ATS said orders may be passed by the court. The court said it did not have any hesitation to allow the plea. “He is also permitted to give his passport size photograph in advocate band and coat, if required as per rules for enrollment as a member of Bar Council of Maharashtra… It is made clear that, the authority shall follow the necessary procedure in accordance with law and rules,” the special judge said.
While charges have been framed against the accused, the trial in the case is yet to commence. The first witness in the case has not yet deposed. On July 13, 2011, bombs exploded at Opera House, Zaveri Bazaar and a bus stop near Dadar kabutarkhana, killing 26 people and injuring 130.
In January 2012, ATS arrested Naqi Ahmed, Nadeem Akhtar, Kanwarnain Pathreja and Haroon Naik for being part of the conspiracy. Police alleged that Yasin Bhatkal, the main planner of the blasts, sent explosives from Delhi to Mumbai, where Naqi received them. They added that Naqi stole a scooter in which a bomb was planted.
