Mumbai records three times worse air quality than Delhi – Indiatimes.com

MUMBAI: Mumbai’s air quality index remained in the ‘very poor’ category with a reading of 303 on Wednesday and was almost three times worst than Delhi’s (118).
This is the first time the air quality entered into the ‘very poor’ category in February.

This is also the first time this month that the pollution level in Mumbai has crossed that of Delhi’s.
It had crossed almost four to five times in January.
Given the SAFAR forecast of poor air quality air continuing for another two days, it could be the worst-ever start of the new year with such low-quality air persisting for a longer duration.
Other than heavy smoke and dust pollution from vehicles, industry, construction sites and garbage dumps, the abnormal drop in surface temperature in the distant Pacific Ocean has drastically reduced the coastal wind speeds around the metropolis.
As a result, the pollutants are hanging in the air instead of getting blown away by the high-speed wind from across the Arabian sea, say experts.
Navi Mumbai (320), Andheri (306), Chembur (331), BKC (328), Borivali (262), Worli (169), Malad (286), Mazagaon (204), Colaba (286), and Bhandup (316) were among the major contributors to the city’s bad AQI on Saturday.
