Japanese national duped of Rs 47,000 in electricity bill fraud in Mumbai – Times of India

MUMBAI: A 36-year-old Japanese woman, staying in Bandra (West), became the latest victim of the light bill scam when a fraudster siphoned off Rs47,000 from her bank account after she was asked to download a remote access app on her mobile to update last month’s bill that the fraudster claimed was unpaid.
The case was registered with the Bandra police on Saturday. Police said the fraudster stole victim Marico Noritaka Takhani’s banking details after she followed the instruction to download the “Any Desk” app and logged into her net banking to transfer Rs100.
Takhani, employed as a supervisor in an airline company in Mumbai, has been staying on rent in Bandra and was duped after she received a text message warning that the power supply will be disconnected by 10.31pm for non-payment of last month’s light bill.
“She called on the number that was mentioned in the message and the fraudster asked her to download the app and pay Rs 100 so that the bill which she had paid last month can be updated in the system. The fraudster got access to her mobile after she downloaded the app and carried out the fraudulent fund transfers,” said a police officer of the Bandra police station.
