Mumbai cops pool in funds for 5-year-old rape survivor’s education – Times of India

MUMBAI: When the rape of a five-year-old girl came to light recently, the Nagpada police in central Mumbai not only cracked it within six hours and nabbed the 15-year-old accused but also took it upon themselves to support the child’s rehabilitation.
Dozens of cops from the station contributed funds, which will be used to open a fixed deposit (FD) of Rs 1.1 lakh at a post office to fund the girl’s development. Thanks to their intervention, the child will also receive free education till Class 10 at a well-known private school near Mumbai Central.
Mahesh Kumar Thakur, senior inspector of Nagpada police, said, “The victim’s father is a daily wage labourer and mother a housewife. They are very poor. I decided to help the girl and spoke to our police personnel. Everyone agreed and we all gave, from Rs 100 to a few thousand. The total money collected is Rs 1.1 lakh and we are going to open an FD for her.”
Police said they also helped the family prepare the child’s Aadhar card and other related documents.
Police get school to support minor rape survivor’s education
Somnath Kale, a detection officer heading the Nagpada police team which cracked the case involving the rape of a minor within hours and apprehended the accused, said he and his colleagues had donated funds to support the child. “We will make the FD (fixed deposit) in such a way that the girl’s family gets some interest every year that will be used for her educational requirement.” The cops also contacted the chairman of a well-known educational institution to secure the child’s admission. “The senior inspector of Nagpada police spoke to me about the girl’s education. We have told them that our school will provide her free education.
Moreover, if she wants to do graduation from our college, the entire education will be free for her and we will take the responsibility of her education,” said the chairman. Senior officials also visited the police station on Republic Day and in their presence, documents required for the girl’s admission in school were handed over to the child’s parents. Zonal DCP Akbar Pathan said, “We are treating the kid like our own family member. We will support her education whenever needed.” The victim’s father told TOI that he works as a labourer and earns Rs 300 to 400 a day to support his family which includes his wife and four children. “Cops are helping me and have told me that they will take care of my child’s education till she completes her studies,” he said.
The incident took place on January 7. Police detained the 15-year-old boy on charges of kidnapping the girl, taking her to a secluded place inside a civic school compound and raping her. He was also booked for punishment for voluntarily causing hurt. Sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act have been invoked. Investigators identified the accused from CCTV footage in the area. He has been sent to the Dongri remand home. Praising the policemen’s action, Y P Singh, former IPS officer-turnedlawyer, said, “This is exemplary work by police. However, it’s been done as a private initiative. It would be better if these things are institutionalized and CSR funds are available for similar incidents involving atrocities on children. The police can get in touch with suitable companies and take forward this welcome precedent.”
(The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court’s directives on cases related to sexual assault)
