Mumbai.

PM Modi is scheduled to attend a function at Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) grounds in the Bandra Kurla Complex, an upscale commercial hub, where he will inaugurate and lay foundation stones of the projects. He is also expected to make a few announcements ahead of the civic polls. Elections to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the country’s richest civic body, are due since last year. The prime minister is likely to address a public rally during his visit to the financial capital.

Some local reports stated that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers are expected to gather at the BKC ground by 1 pm on Thursday, as the Western Express Highway will be kept closed for security reasons. This is PM Modi’s first visit to the city after the Eknath Shinde-led government came to power with the help of the BJP. The two parties are expected to put up a show of strength in Mumbai.

Large size cut outs of PM Modi, Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his deputy Devendra Fadnavis have been put up outside former CM Uddhav Thackeray’s residence in Bandra.

The order issued by DCP (Operations), Mumbai Police, Vishal Thakur stated, “Due to the situation prevailing in the areas under the control of the Commissioner of Police, Brihanmumbai, it is apprehended that during the Prime Minister of India’s Mumbai visit on January 19 at BKC MMRDA Ground, Metro Line no. 7, Gundavali Station to Mograpada Metro Station that anti-social elements may attack using drones, paragliders, remote control microlight aircraft and there is every likelihood breach of peace and disturbance of public tranquility and also there is grave danger to the human life, health, safety and injury to public property.”

“No drone, para-gliders, remote control microlight aircraft flying activities to be allowed in the jurisdiction of BKC police station, Andheri police station, Meghwadi police Station and Jogeshwari police Station,” the order further stated.

Why Are the Two Metro Lines Important?

Metro Line 2A, from Dahisar to DN Nagar, is an 18.6 km long elevated corridor with 17 stations and connects the Western, Central Mumbai and the Northern suburban Mumbai, reducing the current travel time by anything between 50 per cent and 75 per cent depending on road conditions, as per MMRDA.

Metro Line 7, running between Andheri (E) and Dahisar (E), is a 16.5-km elevated corridor with 13 stations. The project cost Rs 6,208 crore. The 10.7-km first phase, between Dahisar and Aarey with nine stations, started in April 2022. The remaining four stations in 5.8 km will start operations from Friday.

Other Projects

Besides the flagging off of metro lines, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also lay foundation stones for setting up two hospitals, and a new sewerage treatment plant in Mumbai to prevent the mixing of sewage water into the sea.
