PM Modi to inaugurate 2 new metro lines in Mumbai on January 19 – India Today

By Pankaj Upadhyay: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate two newly constructed lines of the Mumbai Metro on January 19. The two metro lines 2A and 7 were granted safety clearances by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS).

The line 2A connects Dahanukarwadi in Kandivali to DN Nagar and line 7 connects Aarey Road to the Andheri Highway.

Commissioner of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), SVR Srinivas, told India Today that the commercial operations and revenue-generating exercise on the two metro lines will start on January 20, the day after the inauguration.

“Passengers can board the metros in the new metro rails from 20 January at 4 pm,” he said.

Srinivas had inspected several metro stations on January 13 to check their preparedness before the metro starts running. “The preparations are in place and we are eagerly awaiting for the Prime Minister to inaugurate the two metro lines,” said Srinivas.

He added that PM Modi will be requested to take a ride on the new metro. Srinivas further said that on the day of the inauguration, PM Modi will also launch the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) and a mobile app.

WHAT ARE THE FEATURES OF THE NEW LINES?

Talking about the features of the new lines, Srinivas said that the train would have a maximum speed of 70 kilometres per hour. The metro rail can carry 2280 passengers and has a capacity of 380 passengers per coach. There will be a separate coach for lady passengers. Each station will have CCTV cameras, security systems and a female security guard as well.

The metros will be operated without drivers. However, they will be manned and officials will supervise the process for a month before taking further decisions.

The MMRDA chief said that the team encountered several challenges along the way, mainly due to the Covid-19 pandemic which hampered the work for months.

According to Srinivas, working on Link Road was a challenging task due to heavy traffic in the area. He added that a large number of vehicles were parked on both sides of the road at night.

The work was undertaken at a slow pace with adequate co-ordination and support of the traffic police, he added.
