The Russia-Ukraine war is affecting India’s strategic interests. India is facing ‘some problems’ in transporting back one of its diesel-electric submarines INS Sindhuratna. As Western countries perceive the war as an aggression by Russia, they have slapped sanctions on Moscow. Russian-origin Submarine was sent to Moscow for a major refit after an accident. India continues to grapple with alternate payment mechanisms for new inductions and maintenance of existing inventory in the wake of western sanctions on Moscow. According to sources things are being managed to get the issues resolved. The submarine should have ideally come directly back from Russia. But because of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, there are some transportation and other problems. Indian Navy wants INS Sindhuratna to be loaded on a transport ship to Mumbai via the Cape of Good Hope. INS Sindhuratna had a major fire accident in February 2014 that killed two officers.
