MUMBAI: A labourer died after falling from the 10th floor at an under-construction site of the 24-storey Om Trimurti residential tower in Malad (East) on Friday.
The deceased, Manish Bhaliya (46), had a fall soon after he finished his work at around 5.30pm and was getting ready to leave for his home. Kurar police has registered a first information report (FIR) against the contractor Bharat Chotaliya and developer JE VEE reportedly for not providing adequate safety measures at the construction site that led to the mishap.
The incident occurred at around 5.30pm when Bhaliya informed other labourers present at the site that he has finished his work and is leaving for home. The lobby was slippery which led to the incident. “Suddenly, I heard a noise seconds after Bhaliya left the 10th floor where we were fitting tiles. He has fallen from the unprotected window opening next to the building lift,” Bhaliya’s co-worker Ajay Shah (40) told TOI.
Shah who has been working at the site for the last two months said that Bhaliya got married a few months ago. “On hearing the scream, I rushed out of the flat where I was cleaning the floor. I saw Bhaliya has fallen down from the lobby window and was found lying in a pool of blood. Along with other workers, Bhaliya was rushed to a hospital in Kandivali where he was declared dead on admission,” he said.
Kurar police senior inspector Satish Gadhve said the developer and the contractor have been booked under the Indian Penal Code section 304 (A) (causing death due to negligence). A preliminary probe showed that the labourers were not provided with safety equipment like–kits, shoes, jackets, belts, etc. Police are probing the matter and are yet to make an arrest.
On June 11, the MIDC police arrested the builder and the civil contractor for negligence after a labourer, Mohammed Shaikh (25), died falling from the fourth-floor unguarded lift duct at an under-construction building in Andheri (East) on June 10.
Vile Parle police arrested contractor Kantilal Patel for negligence after 20-year-old labourer Mohankumar Mahato died after he lost balance on the sixth floor while working at the SRA Building in Vile Parle (East) on March 20. Patel was later released on bail.
On March 7, painter Minaulal Mukesh Ali Shaikh (28) died falling from the third-floor parapet. The Dindoshi Police booked the contractor, Kanhaiyalal, for allegedly not providing the safety gear for the painters like harness or helmet for the painting job at the Malad east f flat.
