MUMBAI: In a judgment that highlights the impact of sexual offences on the mental health of a sexual abuse survivor, a magistrate’s court has convicted and sentenced a 39-year-old sandwich seller to one year rigorous imprisonment for molesting a woman, a flower seller, outside a city garden in 2016.
The court said that the offence of outraging the modesty of woman is against her dignity. “It degrades and humiliates them. This type of offences not only cause physical harm but also affect the mental health of woman… if unwarranted leniency is shown and accused is released on fine only it will adversely affect the society,” said metropolitan magistrate Nadeem A Patel.
The magistrate refuted the defence of accused Ganesh Karande that he was falsely implicated.
