MUMBAI: An FIR against unknown persons has been lodged at the Marine Drive police station on Saturday, after two newborn puppies were reportedly thrown from a height at Ravindra Mansion in Churchgate.
An animal welfare officer appointed by the Bombay high court, Geeten Dudani, said: “The killed pups were just one-day-old. I had got a tip-off that they were thrown from a certain flat of Ravindra Mansion. I had earlier registered a complaint against this offender last year too for another animal cruelty case. However, this time, the police only registered the case against unknown person.”
Dudani further added: “There was a delay even while lodging the FIR as the police first wanted the post-mortem of the puppies to be conducted at the Parel based animal hospital. However, legally speaking the PM report will only be available after the complaint is lodged first. We have therefore asked senior city police officers to further inquire into this serious animal cruelty.”
The police filed the case under IPC 428 and section 11(1)(a) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
Dudani, who is also a member of Bombay Animal Rights (BAR), further stated: “The mother of the dead pups was also seen on the staircase of the building, sitting next to the tiny bodies. A cleaning staff had also noticed this pitiable scene and informed the other residents. Only if the perpetrators of such heinous crimes are identified and booked, will there be some sense of justice for the mute victims.” He added: “We expect the police to be more sensitive towards such animal cruelty cases and show compassion and deal firmly with the culprits.”
