Mumbai News Live:  The Bombay High Court refused interim release to NCP leader & state minister Nawab Malik, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for alleged money laundering and “active involvement in terror funding” in connection with a 1999 land deal with don Dawood Ibrahim’s sister.

With a total of 16,39,172 students, the Maharashtra Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination kicked-off Tuesday after a year’s gap following a massive spike in the number of Covid-19 cases in the state. According to officials, examinees were given an additional 10 minutes to read the question paper. While the students were expected to be seated by 10 am, half-an-hour before the start time, they were given the question paper at 10.20 am.

The Brihanmumbai municipal corporation (BMC) has asked Union minister Narayan Rane to demolish “unauthorised” construction at his bungalow in suburban Juhu within 15 days, civic officials said on Monday.

In the wake of severe heat wave conditions in Mumbai and neighbouring districts, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appealed to citizens to stay safe and hydrated and avoid going out in the afternoon.
          
A person suffering from a heat stroke should immediately be taken to hospital, it said, and asked people to increase the intake of water and other healthy fluids.
        
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange alert’ (severe heat wave conditions in some parts) for Tuesday and a ‘yellow alert’ (heat wave conditions in isolated parts) for Wednesday. (PTI)

A region or locality is considered to be under the influence of heatwave if the maximum temperature reaches or exceeds 40 degrees Celsius in the plains, or 30 degrees Celsius in hilly regions. Over the coastal regions, the threshold for the maximum temperature is 37 degrees.

When the maximum temperature departure ranges between 4.5 and 6 degrees, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) declares heatwave. For instance, if the normal temperature of a locality should be 40 degrees, and the actual recorded temperature is 45 degrees, the locality is under heatwave.

Likewise, severe heatwave is declared when the recorded maximum temperature of a locality departure from normal is over 6.4 degrees. Read more

Shah Rukh took to Twitter and shared an announcement poster, which read “SRK+, coming soon”. Shah Rukh and his production banner Red Chillies Entertainment, however, are yet to confirm if SRK+ is indeed his new OTT app.

Mumbai police have registered an FIR against BJP MLC Pravin Darekar in connection with an alleged bank scam case, an official said on Tuesday.The FIR against leader of opposition in the state Legislative Council was registered on Monday under various IPC sections, including 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 120-b (criminal conspiracy) following a complaint by Aam Aadmi Party functionary Dhananjay Shinde.

The complainant alleged that Darekar posed as a labourer, which was later found wrong. He was the Mumbai Bank chairman from 2011 to 2021 and allegedly indulged in various financial irregularities, he said. Read more

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday refused to direct  release of NCP leader and state minister Nawab Malik, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for alleged money laundering and “active involvement in terror funding” in connection with a 1999 land deal with don Dawood Ibrahim’s sister.  

‘As certain debatable issues are raised, they require to be heard at length. Considering the grounds assigned by us we are not inclined to allow the prayers in the interim application. Interim Applications rejected,’ the court noted. The bench said that once Malik’s lawyers move his plea for final hearing, it will accordingly fix the date for the same. Omkar Gokhale reports

The Central Railway is all set to invite fresh tenders for the redevelopment of iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) as it has a received a nod from the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC) recently.

After the requisite approval from the MHCC, the documents will be sent to Public Private Partnership Approval Committee (PPPAC) after which a fresh Request For Quotation (RFP) cum Request For Proposal (RFP) will be invited, said an official. The railways had earlier planned to redevelop the CSMT on a Public Private Partnership model but it was dropped in favour of the hybrid annuity model which is a mix of Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) and Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) models wherein the station would be leased out to developer for 27 years. Although the Indian Railways has issued an order for resuming the linen service facilities in the trains, commuters travelling on the Central Railways (CR) will have to wait for two months for the facility as the automatic laundry machines, which were shut for over two years, need repairs and maintenance.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray unveiled Mumbai’s Climate Action Plan (MCAP), set to be India’s first climate action plan to set a short, medium and long-term climate goals aimed towards a net-zero target of 2050. Low-carbon electricity, switch to 100 per cent zero-emission vehicles by 2050, flood-resilient infrastructure, localised water conservation and improved air quality monitoring are some of the highlights of the plan.

Several heatwave warnings have been issued for the Konkan Region — Palghar, Thane, Mumbai and Raigad for March 14-15. A yellow alert, indicating heatwave like conditions at isolated pockets in the Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg is issued for March 16 (Wednesday).
