BMC Budget 2022 Live: Maharashtra recorded 15,252 new Covid-19, and 75 fatalities, the state health department said. No Omicron infection was reported during the day. The state has so far reported 3,334 infections of the Omicron variant. Mumbai on the other hand, recorded 827 new Covid-19 cases and seven deaths. Mumbai reported a second dip of 301 cases from a day ago and the daily tally was below 1,000.

BMC chief IS Chahal presented a budget of Rs 45,940.78 crore for the financial year 2022-23. The budget allocation has increased by 17.70 percent from last year. The civic budget was Rs 39,038.83 crore in 2021-22. While Rs 1 crore has been allocated for the creation of a climate action cell, Rs 3,500 crore have been earmarked for the ambitious Mumbai Coastal Road project.

In another development, another witness in the 2008 Malegaon blast case turned hostile on Thursday, claiming that he was pressured by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) to name members of the RSS. Of the 226 witnesses who have deposed so far, he was the 17th witness to not support the prosecution case.

The Mumbai police have taken the custody of gangster Suresh Pujari in a Rs 10-crore extortion case, an official said on Thursday. Suresh Pujari was wanted in the extortion case registered at the Chembur Police Station in suburban Mumbai on a complaint filed by a share broker and the crime branch has taken his custody for questioning in the matter, the official said.

At least, 10 persons have been arrested in the case and Suresh Pujari was their leader, he said, adding stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) sections have been invoked against the accused. The gangster was shown as arrested in the extortion case and produced before a court on Thursday, which sent him to police custody till February 8, the official said.

Maharashtra agriculture minister Dada Bhuse on Thursday said he had asked state officials to follow up with the Union government farmers’ complaints about crop insurance claims. Bhuse was speaking to reporters after holding a meeting with officials and farmer leaders on the issue. Insurance companies try to avoid payment of insurance amount to farmers on technical grounds, said Ravikant Tupkar, a leader of the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna.

“Untimely and heavy showers damaged crops in Marathwada last year. As per the rules, a farmer must register a complaint about crop damage within 72 hours. But there was no mobile phone connectivity because of rains, so many farmers could not do that,” Tupkar told reporters.

Dismissed Mumbai police officer Sachin Waze on Thursday told an inquiry commission, probing corruption allegations against former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh, that he wants to file an affidavit to retract certain deposition made during his cross-examination. Waze, currently in judicial custody following his arrest in the Antilia bomb scare-Mansukh Hiran murder case, had recently deposed before the commission headed by Justice K U Chandiwal (retd).

The state government formed the commission last year to probe allegations of corruption levelled against Deshmukh, a senior NCP leader, by former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh. Waze’s statement is part of a supplementary charge-sheet filed by the ED in a money laundering case against Deshmukh, which stems from the graft allegations, in a court here in December last year. Besides Deshmukh, his two sons as well as nine others, including companies, have been named in the charge-sheet.

Maharashtra on Thursday recorded 15,252 new coronavirus cases and 75 fatalities, the state health department said. No Omicron infection was reported during the day. The state has so far reported 3,334 infections of the Omicron variant. The COVID-19 caseload rose to 77,68,800, and death toll to 1,42,859. On Wednesday, the state had recorded 18,067 cases and 79 fatalities. Pune recorded 2,156 new cases on Thursday, followed by Nagpur (1,420), Pimpri-Chinchwad (1,012), Mumbai (834) and Nashik (474).

Mumbai’s daily coronavirus count again dropped below the 1,000-mark as it reported 827 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday, while seven more patients died due to the infection, the city civic body said.
  
With these additions, the tally of coronavirus infections rose to 10,49,348, while the death toll increased to 16,647, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) bulletin said.

Mumbai reported a dip of 301 cases from a day ago and the daily tally again went below 1,000. On Wednesday, the financial capital had reported 1,128 cases and 10 fatalities after recording 803 infections and seven fatalities on Tuesday. (PTI)

The Mumbai police on Tuesday arrested two men for rash and negligent driving after a video showing one of them traveling on the bonnet of a car driven by the other on a road near the Bandra-Worli sealink in Bandra (west) had gone viral on social media.

The Mumbai police uploaded a video of the incident on their Twitter handle, making an example out of them to deter other motorists. It also includes an apology by them with their faces blurred.

The incident took place around 8.50 pm on Monday night on the road leading to the Bandra-Worli sealink. The accused Imran Ansari (27) was seated on the bonnet of the car and his friend Gulfam Ansari (25) was driving it. The duo was going towards Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Read more

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday unveiled a budget of Rs 45,949.21 crore for 2022-23 and allocated Rs 3,200 crore for the coastal road project and Rs 6,933.75 crore for health, while it provided property tax relief for small flat owners ahead of civic elections.

The budget of India’s richest civic body, ruled by the Shiv Sena and set for polls in the new few months, which has no proposal for new taxes, was 17.70 per cent higher than the last fiscal when the total outlay was Rs 39,038.83 crore.

Mumbai municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal presented the budget before the civic standing committee meeting held at the BMC headquarters and said its main focus was on health, infrastructure and education. In the budget, the civic body announced 100 per cent relief from payment of property tax for flats measuring up to 500 square feet of carpet area. (PTI)

For the financial year 2022-23, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has presented a budget estimate of Rs 45,949.21 crore, up 17.70 per cent from last year.

Municipal Commissioner I S Chahal on Thursday tabled the budget before the standing committee for approval. The corporation has allocated Rs 22,646.73 crore for capital expenditure to take up big-ticket projects such as Coastal Road, Goregaon-Mulund Link Road, sewage treatment plants and desalination plants.

While Rs 3,200 crore has been earmarked Coastal Road, for Goregaon-Mulund Link Road it has budgeted Rs 1,300 crore. Read more

According to Aaditya Thackeray, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation budget 2022-23 is progressive, compassionate, sustainable development oriented and one of the hopes and aspirations. But most importantly it is backed by substance and commitments. 

Three persons have been arrested in connection with a series of thefts of car silencers in Thane and Palghar districts of Maharashtra, police said on Thursday.
          
Based on a tip-off, the MBVV police nabbed Imran Irshad Khan (35), Sharukh Naseem Khan (24) and Javed Bashir Khan (28) from Ghatkopar area of neighbouring Mumbai, assistant police inspector Datta Sarak of the Central Crime Unit (CCU) of the MBVV police said.
        
The police have seized parts of silencers and accessories used to remove these parts from cars, he said. An offence under section 379 (theft) of the IPC had been registered against the accused, he said. (PTI)

The Bombay High Court on Thursday sought NCP leader and Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik’s reply to the contempt plea filed by Dnyandev Wankhede, father of the former zonal director of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Sameer Wankhede.
          
A bench of Justices S J Kathawalla and Milind Jadhav also sought to know why Malik was repeatedly taking concessions with the undertaking he submitted to the high court on not making any defamatory comments against the Wankhedes. It said that if the minister was to misuse the concession in such a manner then the court will withdraw it. 
        
Last month, Dnyandev Wankhede had filed the contempt petition in the high court against Malik, alleging that the minister had committed a wilful breach of his undertaking given to the court in December last year of not making or posting any defamatory comments against the Wankhedes. (PTI)

BJP MLA from Kandivali East constituency Atul Bhatkhalhar criticised the Shiv Sena-led BMC for posting updates on the civic budget in English.

In a tweet in Marathi, he wrote, “Shiv Sena, which insists on Marathi boards for businesses, has tweeted the budget of its ruling party 
in English. Pay attention to Sanjay Raut.”

In the BMC budget for 2022-23, the civic body announced 100 per cent relief from payment of property tax for the flats measuring up to 500 square feet of carpet area.

“About 16,14,000 citizens will get 100 per cent property tax relief. The amount of exemption to citizens is to the tune of Rs 462 crore per annum,” BMc chief IS Chahal said in his budget speech.

In the second phase of the revamp of Byculla Zoo, the construction of the remaining three animal exhibits of Otter, Sambar and Barking deer and Nilgai and Four horned antelope is nearing completion.

In the third phase, it has been proposed to develop a zoo extension facility on the two adjacent plots (measuring around 10 acres).

Exhibits for various exotic species like Giraffe, Zebra, White Lion, Jaguar, etc. will be developed for which Request For Proposals (RFPs) are being finalised. A budgetary provision of Rs 115.46 crore has been made for zoo-related works.

The work of demolition and reconstruction of 21 bridges, major repairs of 47 bridges and minor repairs of 144 bridges is in progress.

BMC has completed the building of Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule Hospital at Borivali (East), Topiwala Maternity Home at Goregaon (West), Wadala Maternity Home, Prabhadevi Maternity Home, Deonar Maternity Home and Shivaji Nagar Maternity Home, Dahanukarwadi Health Post and Dispensary, Chandanwadi Health Post and Mulund Dispensary.

  • “Considering the need of predicting the potential risks and to minimise the impact of impending disasters, it is proposed to collaborate with United Nations Development Project (UNDP) to carryout Multi Hazard Vulnerability Risk Assessment (MHVRA) of Mumbai City and Suburb under the review of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).”
  • “I have to state that the perilous situation of the Covid-19 pandemic still exists. Though we have to expend sizable funds continuously this year also on all healthcare facilities, I have emphasized that we will take all efforts for the execution of all important projects in the scheduled time and with due consideration to the financial cash flow situation.   • For Roads and Traffic Operations department, an allocation of Rs 2,200 crore for capital expenditure has been made.
  • A budget provision of Rs 35 crore is proposed for a project of Mosquito Breeding Detector.
  • To support BMC’s Civic Tech Business incubator project Society for Mumbai Incubation Lab to Entrepreneurship (SMILE) and for implementation of ease of doing business framework, Rs 10 crore has been allocated.
  • BMC introduce modes to conduct payment of property tax bill and water tax bill through Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS).

The BMC plans to convert six peripheral hospitals – Rajawadi Hospital, Bhabha Hospital in Kurla and Bandra, VN Desai Hospital, Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital which is also known as Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali, and Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital in Govandi into “Mini Medical Colleges”.

The civic body will also extend the proton therapy facility, currently at Nair Hospital, to the Tata Memorial Hospital.

To lessen the burden on tertiary care hospitals, BMC also plans to start 100 health care centers in the first phase under ‘At your neighborhood’. In these centres, around 139 types of diagnostic tests like, X-ray, CT Scan and mammography, will be available at nominal rates.

These centres will facilitate consultation by specialist and superspecialist doctors from KEM, Sion, Nair and Cooper hospitals via telemedicine. Checkup programme for diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure and heart disease will be arranged.

In the year 2022-23, provision of Rs 257.5 crore for upgradation of dispensaries, Rs 11 crore for standardisation of 13 dispensaries and Rs 35.38 crore for upgradation of maternity homes is proposed.

Two new maternity home at Rawalpada in R/North ward and at Shivaji Nagar in M/East ward will be commissioned in next
financial year.

Ahead of civic elections, the BMC published draft ward boundaries for 236 wards and invited suggestions and objections from the public. After the state government gave go-ahead for increasing the number of civic wards to 236 from 227, the civic body prepared the draft ward boundaries for creation of nine new wards. The BMC on Tuesday tweeted about the draft notification, according to which people can submit suggestions and objections till February 14.

YouTuber ‘Hindustani Bhau’ alias Vikas Fhatak and another person were arrested on Tuesday in connection with a protest by students near Maharashtra Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad’s residence. A case was also registered in Nagpur during the day and Fhatak (41), a YouTube influencer, will be arrested in that case later, police said.

The sudden protests in which students participated in large numbers on Monday had taken the authorities by surprise. Fhatak had, in a YouTube video, allegedly asked students to gather near Gaikwad’s residence in Dharavi area and demand cancellation of offline exams for classes 10 and 12 due to the Covid-19 situation, officials said.
