Planning New Year bash in Mumbai? Know the new Covid-19 guidelines here – India Today

Amid rising covid cases and the growing threat of the new variant, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has formulated some strict guidelines for people to follow. These rules are especially made to control gathering and the spread of the virus during New Year.

The BMC has banned any New Year celebration programmes and gatherings in any closed or open areas in the city. A night curfew has also been implemented along with a few other rules.

Night curfew timings

A night curfew is in effect from 9 pm to 6 am in Mumbai. However, it is important to note that there is no night curfew on December 31.

Iqbal Singh Chahal, the municipal commissioner was quoted by News18 as saying, “Curfew doesn’t mean we are shutting down everything post 9pm. We have only restricted crowding at public places such as beaches, parks, marine drive.”

What’s allowed and what’s not allowed?

1. There is a ban on any New Year party, celebration or gathering in an open or confined space within the BMC jurisdiction

2. A group of more than five people are not allowed in any public place from 9 pm to 6 am.

3. For wedding, social, political, religious events, or ceremonies only 100 people are allowed to gather. In open spaces, 250 people or 25% of the capacity, whichever less, is allowed.

4. Places with permanent sitting arrangements can run on a 50% capacity. Places with non-permanent sitting arrangements can run on a capacity of 25%.

5. Restaurants, gyms, spas, cinemas, theatres can only operate at 50% of the capacity.

6. Sports events and ceremonies can have only 25% of seating capacity.

7. Only fully vaccinated people will be allowed in public places.

Mumbai Covid cases in the last 24 hours

Mumbai on Tuesday reported 1,377 fresh coronavirus positive cases and one death, taking the tally of positive patients to 7,73,298. The death toll is pegged at 16,374, the city civic body said.

A total of 338 people were discharged during the day, which raised the cumulative number of recoveries in Mumbai to 7,48,537, the civic body said in a statement.

With 32,369 new tests, the number of samples tested so far in the financial capital went up to 1,35,24,610 it said.

Mumbai’s case recovery rate is 97 per cent. The case doubling rate is 841 days.

The number of Omicron cases in Mumbai stands at 84, the highest among all. The health department in a statement said that no new cases of Omicron variant were reported in Maharashtra in the last 24 hours, keeping the tally unchanged at 167. A total of 91 patients previously infected by the strain have recovered.

Health minister expresses concern over Covid-19 situation

Expressing concern over the sharp rise in Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra, state health minister Rajesh Tope on Wednesday termed the situation ‘alarming’, reported news agency PTI. He said that in the last eight to ten days the active cases stood in the range of 5,000-6,000.

Tope urged people to follow necessary Covid-19 guidelines, wear masks and follow social distancing norms. He also expressed concern over the fast doubling rate of cases in the state, and the rising number of infections in Mumbai.
