Mumbai Live News: Mumbai recorded 1,333 cases on Tuesday, a steep rise from 809 infections reported a day ago. This is the highest one-day surge in the city since May 26, when 1,352 cases were registered. Mumbai also accounted for 63.3% of state’s tally of 2,172 Covid cases on Tuesday. In other news, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government on Tuesday stepped back from an outright confrontation with Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and postponed the election for the Speaker’s post as it might have been legally challenged. Sources said that while the government was keen on holding the election for Speaker on the last day of the winter session, MVA leaders on Tuesday morning decided not to go ahead with it after a letter was received from the Governor. There was consensus that the election be deferred to avoid legal tangles.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, who is recuperating from a spine surgery, remained absent during the entire five-day-long winter session of the state legislature which ended on Tuesday. While his office maintained that Thackeray was keeping good health, he has not been seen in public barring a quiet visit to the legislature premises on December 18.
