Mumbai: Dog’s penis cut off in Andheri; cops told to lodge offence – Times of India

MUMBAI: A case of animal brutality has been reported from Kapaswadi area in Mumbai’s Andheri (west) where a dog’s penis was fully cut off by an unknown culprit on the night of December 25.
The profusely bleeding dog was taken to Bombay SPCA animal hospital in Parel where an emergency operation was done to save the dog’s life.
The honorary animal officer of the Bombay high court appointed committee to monitor animal welfare laws in Maharashtra, Dr Nandini Kulkarni, said: “It is very shocking and unfortunate that a young street dog’s penis was cut off by someone. It has possibly occurred at the time of mating in that area. I have asked the senior Mumbai police officials and the state animal husbandry department to further inquire into the matter.”
The deputy commissioner of animal husbandry department and member secretary of Mumbai district SPCA, Dr Shailesh Pethe, has now formally written to the DN Nagar police to lodge an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
A local animal feeder, Aban Mistry, told TOI, “As soon as we came to know about the injured dog at Kapaswadi (along the new Link Road), we rushed to the site and asked people as to who could have committed this heinous crime. Along with another feeder, Hena, the dog was transported to BSPCA, where its condition is not fully out of danger.”
The honorary district animal welfare officer of Animal Welfare Board of India, Mitesh Jain, commented, “We are asking the local police to check if any clues are available from CCTV footage of the Andheri site. This is a very horrid animal cruelty against a mute animal.”
Meanwhile, animal rights activists have also written to the Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, urging him to order an official investigation into this matter on priority basis, in order to catch the offenders.
Activists have also reiterated that the PCA Act of 1960 must be amended in order to enforce stringent punishment for those who harm animals.
Currently, once can get away by paying just Rs 50 as penalty after commiting animal cruelty.
