MUMBAI: Heavy rains lashed parts of Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai since early morning on Monday, leading to massive waterlogging, disruption of local train services and vehicular traffic across several locations in the city and its suburbs.
The suburban trains on the Central Railway’s main line as well as the Harbour line are running behind their schedule, an official said. Local train services are currently running only for personnel engaged in healthcare and other essential services, and are out of bounds for general commuters in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Western Railways’ suburban services are running normally between Churchgate and Dahanu Road.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate to heavy rain and thundershowers in Mumbai and suburbs with the possibility of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places.

According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai city has received 48.88 mm rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8 am on Monday, adding that the eastern suburbs recorded 90.65 mm and western suburbs recorded 51.89 mm of rainfall. The BMC suggests that the high tide will begin at 7.29 am and the waves will reach a height of 3.60 metres. Also, another high tide is expected at 7:01 pm with a height of 3.58 metres. A low tide of 2.22 metres is likely to occur at 1.14 pm today.
In Navi Mumbai, as per the data shared by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, the city received a total of 1641.44 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Monday. Belapur received 151.2 mm rainfall while Nerul, Vashi, Khoparkhairne, and Airoli received 165.50 mm, 155.00 mm, 256.00 mm, and 222.30 mm rain respectively. The average rain received from 8.30 am on Sunday to 8.30 am on Monday in Navi Mumbai was 190.00 mm.
IMD Colaba and Santacruz observatories have reported 1322.4 mm and 1881.4 mm rainfall since June 1.
Fishermen are advised not to venture along and off the North and South Maharashtra-Goa coast till July 22.
The BMC has appealed to people to stay at home unless there is an emergency following incessant rain since Sunday.
