Crowds return to Mumbai bazaars, public places even as fear of 3rd wave looms – India Today

Mumbai is by and large back to its normal self after overcoming the devastating second wave of Covid-19 that claimed hundreds of lives in the city.

Even though malls and multiplexes in Mumbai are yet to open, the bazaars and public places are back to being their crowded selves, where many can be seen letting their guards down.

Local trains are yet to open to the common public as the government fears the Mumbai lifeline might become a super spreader as was seen in the days following the previous unlocking.

Mumbai now has a Covid-19 recovery rate of 96% while the case doubling rate has further improved to 844 days. On July 7, Mumbai recorded 664 fresh Covid-19 cases and 9 deaths. The active case count is at 7,816.

The number of active containment zones in Mumbai now stands at 13 while active sealed buildings are at 68. This perhaps has given Mumbai residents the belief that the situation on ground zero has improved and they can now let their guards down.

But medical experts say that this is a risk which citizens shouldn’t take. BMC officials on their part have appealed to the people to not let their guards down and abide by Covid-appropriate behaviour.

“The state is focusing on the vaccination programme to help build herd immunity. There is a fear of the third wave for which the state is putting in all possible efforts. There is the scare of the Delta Plus variant as well. Hence, it’s the responsibility of every citizen to see to it that they follow the basic rules of masking, social distancing and sanitising which are for their own safety,” said an official.

Till date, BMC, along with Mumbai Police and Railways has collected more than Rs 55 crore as penalty from citizens for not wearing masks.
