Septuagenarian woman robbed in Mumbai, accused arrested – Times of India

MUMBAI: The police arrested a 39-year-old woman for robbery and criminal intimidation in Worli.
On May 5 in the afternoon, the accused had entered a Worli building on the pretext of collecting information about Covid-19 vaccine from a septuagenarian woman in her flat and later tied her hands with shoe laces, pulled out a knife and robbed her of ornaments worth around Rs 4.5 lakh. During the probe, police learnt the accused was the victim’s neighbor.
Deepali Mhatre, a resident of the neighboring building, had arrived on the first floor of Bhapkar co-operative housing society near Worli Naka. Mhatre stays in the neighboring building along with her mother. She approached the flat inquiring if the 75-year-old victim had taken Covid-19 vaccine or not. In the flat, the old lady was present along with her eight-year-old grandson. The old woman’s son, who is employed at an office in Powai and her daughter in-law who works in Matunga, both were not at home when the incident took place.
The accused then asked for a glass of water. The victim opened the door and went inside to fetch water. The accused followed her and after reaching another room, she threatened her with a knife and tied her hands with shoe laces. The accused robbed jewellery from the cupboard worth around Rs 4.5 lakh and fled. She was wearing a mask at the time of robbery.
“We checked CCTV cameras but couldn’t get any leads. Later, we again spoke to the victim and her grandson. The boy said he had seen a tattoo on the accused’s hand. We further learnt that the accused had spoken to someone about the couple’s office / work time. We then checked her mobile location, dumped data records and brought her for inquiry. Initially she refused but later admitted to her crime. We have recovered almost the entire robbed jewellery,” said Anil Koli, senior inspector of Worli police station.
