Take cues from Mumbai model: SC tells Centre on Delhi oxygen crisis – Mumbai Mirror

Mumbai: The Supreme Court on Wednesday suggested the Centre to take notes from Mumbai civic authorities on how to tackle the oxygen supply amid an acute shortage of the life-saving gas in Delhi.

A bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud was hearing the Centre’s plea challenging the Delhi High Court’s contempt notice against officials for not following its orders.

Justice Chandrachud stated that he does not mean any disrespect towards the authorities in Delhi, but advised that they might want to study the Mumbai model on managing oxygen supplies. “Bombay Municipal Corporation has done some remarkable work and not disrespecting Delhi but we can maybe see what was done by BMC. Maharashtra is also an oxygen supply state,” he said.

During the hearing, the apex court mentioned that most of its judges also reside in Delhi and that they can imagine what the citizens are going through.

The bench also asked the Centre about the supply it has made to the capital since May 3. When the Centre shared that it has provided 550 MT oxygen, the top court asked to make it 700 MT “even if it takes the point of Centre that it is way beyond the requirement of oxygen for the number of patients”.

Reiterating that the national capital is at a “very critical stage”, the court asked the Centre to inform how 700 MT oxygen supply is maintained daily for the next four days.

“We direct that by 10.30 am tomorrow, the Centre shall place a comprehensive plan in the form of a chart, indicating the manner in which the direction for allocation of 700 metric tonnes shall be complied with,” the court said.

Besides, it also asked the Centre to maintain transparency on the ongoing oxygen crisis and keep the citizens informed at all times.
