MUMBAI: Maharashtra recorded a sharp rise in Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, with a total of 4,787 detected, the highest in 70 days.
Mumbai, too, recorded over 700 cases (721), its highest in 42 days and up from an average of 450-500 cases seen over the past week. The city’s overall tally reached 3,15,751, while that of the state touched 20,76,093.
Compared to the previous two days, the jump in cases is over 30% in the state. Daily detections increased from 3,365 on Monday to 3,663 on Tuesday and 4,787 on Wednesday.
The last time the state saw more than 4,787 cases was on December 9 (4,981).
Officials attributed the rise to an increase in testing, particularly in Vidarbha region, where Amravati, Akola, Yavatmal, Washim and Buldhana have seen a significant jump in cases and positivity rate.
