Mumbai: 3 cabbies rig app, fleece passengers from airport – Times of India

MUMBAI: The crime branch arrested three drivers of a ride-sharing company who allegedly tampered with the company’s app which allowed them to charge extra and dupe passengers travelling from the city international airport.
Police said the main accused misused the app for six months and had allegedly shared it with at least 40 other drivers of the company.
Acting on a tip off, the crime branch sent dummy customers on Sunday and arrested the three drivers.
Police inspector Vinayak Meher refused to divulge their names as it would hamper the probe and alert other drivers misusing the app.
Police said that the drivers did not update the latest version of the app and were using an earlier one. “The drivers would briefly switch off the GPS while ferrying passengers from the airport to Panvel or Thane, and switch it on again. The tampered app would show additional 10-20 km and they would charge accordingly,’’ said Meher.
An average bill of Rs 450 for the ride would go up to Rs 600 to Rs 650 for the passenger. The police are looking for at least 40 to 50 other drivers in the league.
