Mumbai’s 24-hour Covid count (1,091) lowest in 55 days as dip continues – Times of India

MUMBAI: A day after recording its lowest Covid-19 case tally in over 100 days, Maharashtra reported an increase in cases by 36% and an over 70% increase in deaths compared to Monday. Mumbai, though, continued to report a dip in cases for the sixth day in a row and reported its lowest addition in 55 days.

A total of 8,151 cases and 213 fatalities were reported in the state on Tuesday as against 5,984 cases and 125 deaths on Monday, taking the total cases to 16,09,516 and toll to 42,453. Mumbai added 1,091 cases, its lowest tally in 55 days, and reported 45 deaths, taking its total cases to 2,44,260 and fatalities to 9,864.
Senior officials said there is a considerable dip in overall cases in the state, but in the over nine flood-affected districts in the state, testing has taken a beating, so the numbers have gone down further. They however said the festive season and the state’s decision to allow women commuters to take Mumbai’s local trains during non-peak hours will also lead to a spurt in cases. “In the coming days, with the unlocking we will have to increase testing as well,” a senior official said.
Deaths in the city are now 9,864 and moving towards the grim milestone of 10,000. Civic officials said that of the 45 deceased on Tuesday, 29 had comorbidities. However, discrepancies seem to have cropped up in the city’s toll between the state and civic authorities. State data showed Mumbai’s Covid toll was 9,864, whereas the BMC data showed it as 9,821.
A civic official said Mumbai’s average growth rate of cases was 0.7%, and only nine wards were recording cases above that average. Currently, three city wards, R North, P South and R South, are the only ones with a growth rate of more than 1%. P South and R North are the only wards with a case doubling rate of less than 65 days. The city’s overall doubling rate is 99 days now.
Also, breaking the long-continuing chain, daily additions in the state were higher than the recoveries. A total of 7,429 patients recovered on Tuesday, taking total recoveries to 13.9 lakh and the rate of recovery to 86.5%. Within the state, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region continues to add the highest number of cases daily. Of the 8,151 new cases, 2,353 were from MMR, followed by 1,534 from Pune circle.
Within the MMR, Thane city reported 213 new cases and two deaths, taking the tally of infected people there to 44,306 and the virus toll to 1,112. The recovery rate in Thane city increased to 90.7% with 40,184 patients having recovered till date and 3,010 active cases left. The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation reported 176 cases and two deaths, while Navi Mumbai reported 222 cases and one death.
