Study in contrast: Cases keep falling in Maharashtra, rising in Mumbai – Times of India

MUMBAI: For the sixth day in a row, Maharashtra recorded fewer than 15,000 new Covid-19 cases, but for the second consecutive day Mumbai registered over 2,800 cases — a sharp rise from the 2,000-odd cases it used to register in September.

The state added 13,395 cases and 358 fatalities on Thursday, taking its total caseload to 14,93,884 and deaths to 39,430. The BMC update on Thursday showed 2,823 fresh cases, taking the tally to 2.22 lakh so far. The city’s daily tally is the second-highest after the biggest spike of 2,848 cases seen on Wednesday. The number of deaths in a 24-hour period remained constant at 48; 41 of these victims had co-morbidities while 38 were over 60 years of age.
On the positive side, for the last four days the discharges in the state have been higher than daily additions. A total of 15,575 patients recovered on Thursday, taking total recoveries to 12.1 lakh and the recovery rate to 81.1%. A similar trend was seen in Mumbai: 2,933 recovered on Thursday. The city’s recovery rate is 83%. Active cases in the state also recorded a drop. There are now 2.4 lakh active cases, of which 26,383 are in Mumbai.
“The cases are higher because we have been doing more tests,” said a BMC official. The BMC update on Thursday showed 14,233 tests were done compared to close to 15,683 done the previous day.
Dr Shashank Joshi, a member of the state task force on Covid, said Mumbai’s increased caseload is also a reflection of the poor masking habit among Mumbaikars. “It is not surprising. We have unlocked more. We are testing more, but we are not following Covid- appropriate behaviour.” He said the BMC should impose a higher fine than Rs 200 from people in order to get people to follow the masking rule. “Mumbai is a densely populated place. It has many poorly ventilated structures. And there is no cooperation from people. This is a recipe for disaster,” he added.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) continued to add the highest number of cases in the state. Even on Thursday, it added 4,932 cases and 114 deaths, taking its total cases to 5.1 lakh and fatalities to 16,673. Thane district was on the verge of crossing the 2 lakh cases mark to be the third district in the state to do so; its total cases stood at 1.9 lakh on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Thane city recorded 336 Covid-19 cases and six deaths on Thursday. The number of recovered patients there on Thursday was 287, taking the city’s total recovered patients the 35,000 mark. Thane city currently has 3,635 active cases.
In Navi Mumbai, 330 new cases were reported on Thursday, taking its total Covid-19 count to 39,421. Of these, over 88% of the patients have successfully recovered from the coronavirus. NMMC officials also reported five deaths, taking the total toll there to 798. The PCMC areas reported 225 fresh cases and nine deaths, taking the total positive count there to 20,951 and the death toll to 489.
