Mumbai receives heavy rain on Tuesday evening, yellow alert for Wednesday – Times of India

MUMBAI: The Indian Meteorological Department had issued an orange alert (heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places) for Mumbai and Thane for Tuesday. Santacruz observatory recorded 21.6mm rainfall between 8.30am-8.30pm, while Colaba recorded 50.4mm.
However, rain across the city and western suburbs picked up late on Tuesday evening. “There have been very intense spells of rain across Mumbai for a few hours. Rainfall in range of 70+ mm at many places which could lead to flooding in low lying areas. Entire western side of Mumbai from Colaba to beyond Bhayandar is covered by clouds with maximum height of 7-8 Km causing very heavy spells,” said K S Hosalikar, deputy director-general, western region, IMD.
Meanwhile, Rainfall recorded by Colaba weather observatory crossed the 3,000mm mark for this season on Tuesday morning. With 3,050.9mm rainfall as of 8.30pm, Colaba recorded 1,131.9mm rain more than normal.
Among heavy rain days at the observatory this year were August 5 and 6, when it recorded 332mm. Colaba recorded 108mm rainfall in 24 hours on August 28-29.
IMD issued a yellow alert (heavy rain at isolated places) for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad and an orange alert (heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places) for Palghar on Wednesday. IMD warned that the rains could lead to localised flooding and water logging in low lying areas.
Andheri subway was closed for traffic on Tuesday as two feet deep water had accumulated. Hindmata was also under two feet deep water causing traffic to move slowly. A diversion was given at Sion on the south bound arm, Mumbai Traffic Police said.
Waterlogging was reported outside Byculla railway station and on P D’Mello Road between Dockyard Road and Reay Road. Traffic crawled at both these places. Waterlogging was also reported at Matunga Circle and traffic was diverted to Bhau Daji Lad Road, traffic police said.
