Mumbai News Live Updates, January 16, 2023: BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal Monday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at their Ballard Estate office in South Mumbai in jumbo Covid-19 centres case. The central agency had earlier sent a notice to his office seeking details on the contract awarded to Lifeline Hospital Management Services (LHMS). BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has alleged that the co-partners of LHMS – Sujit Patkar, Dr Hemant Ramsharan Gupta, Sanjay Shah, and Raju Nandkumar Salunkhe – had bagged a contract in 2020 for operating jumbo centres amidst the Covid-19 pandemic by allegedly providing forged documents.

Meanwhile, a decline in Mumbai’s temperature Sunday contributed to the deterioration of the city’s Air-Quality Index (AQI), as the recorded AQI stayed worse than Delhi. Mumbai’s overall AQI in the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecast and Research (SAFAR) dashboard showed 290, which is categorised as ‘poor,’ whereas Delhi’s AQI on Sunday showed 193, which is categorised as ‘moderate’. Senior scientist and project director of SAFAR Gufran Beig stated that the quality of AQI is being reversed every 3 weeks, owing to a reversal of wind direction … this pattern would continue till the end of winter.”

In other news, the second phase of the two Mumbai Metro lines — 2A (Dahisar East-DN Nagar (Andheri west)) and Line 7 (Andheri east-Dahisar east) will be commissioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 19, following which they will be open to public use the next day. The two elevated corridors are expected to help reduce crowds on local trains by 10-15 per cent. Commuters will experience a seamless experience in an AC rake for Rs 10 for every 3 km.
