Mumbai News Live Updates: Wearing seat belts by drivers, co-passengers to be compulsory in city from November 1 – Times of India

The increase in bike registrations in Mumbai has added to congestion, pollution and parking woes. There is also growing concern about rash driving, say transport experts, adding that bikes now occupy more road space and sometimes ride very close to or on footpaths, causing inconvenience to pedestrians. The bike density in Mumbai increased by 100 in 2018, 75 in 2019, 50 in 2020 and 75 in 2021. “The issue of rising two-wheelers not just in Mumbai but also other cities across Asia was discussed at a conference on two-wheeler safety in Manila, the Philippines, on Wednesday,” said United Way Mumbai vicepresident (community impact) Ajay Govale, who was a representative from India. “There has been an increase in bike sales everywhere in the world in recent years as it is considered to be an affordable transport mode. Public transport, which takes you from point A to point B, cannot replace it as bikes can take you from doorstep to any destination, however narrow the road. What is required is to increase the pace of enforcement and to discipline errant riders flouting traffic rules,” he told TOI.
