MUMBAI: A 25-year-old e-commerce delivery boy was killed in a hit-and-run on Malad Link Road when a speeding dumper rammed into his motorcycle recently.
Sudhir Kumar Chaudhary worked for a grocery delivery company and was on his way to deliver an order when the crash occurred. Police officials said there were no electronic surveillance cameras at the crash location and so it was not possible to determine exactly how the crash occurred. The Bangur Nagar police registered an FIR and later tracked down the dumper driver.
The crash occurred around 7.20 am on August 5. Mahesh Patil, a security guard deployed at the Infinity Mall junction by a construction company, was one of the eyewitnesses.
Patil told the police that the dumper driver was rash and negligent and that after he rammed into the motorcycle, he fled without helping Chaudhary.
After Patil summoned them, a police team rushed to the spot and moved a grievously injured Chaudhary to the Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivali. Doctors pronounced him dead. Chaudhary was a resident of Ambhujwadi in Malwani.
One of the witnesses had noted down the registration number of the fleeing dumper and gave it to the police. The driver was tracked down and subsequently held under the Indian Penal Code’s section 304-A (causing death by negligence).
Deaths of bikers and pedestrians owing to heavy vehicles has always been a matter of concern. Lack of road training has also been a matter of concern in developing countries. Former city police commissioner Sanjay Pandey had held a meeting with representatives of e-commerce companies, attached to courier services, food sales, online commerce and groceries, instructing to not incentivise speedy deliveries. Pandey told the companies to ensure that employees on the road adopted a cautious approach.
