Mumbai: Cutting of trees begin at Aarey Colony – Times of India

Residents of Aarey were in for a rude shock as all buses had been diverted and they could not travel to work outside the colony.

MUMBAI: Monday morning for road commuters in the city began with closed signs at all entry/exit points to Aarey Colony.
The Traffic police put out a notice stating that roads passing through Aarey had been temporarily closed for traffic from Sunday midnight to 24 hours as various works were being carried out by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation and BMC. It further said this was being done for the safety of the commuters.
Residents of Aarey were in for a rude shock as all buses had been diverted and they could not travel to work outside the colony.
“Schools were closed down and children were told to go back home. Children had to walk back home as there were no buses,” said an adivasi resident from Khambachapada.
The BMC had deployed men and machinery to carry out the cutting/trimming of trees. Notices had already been pasted on several trees near Picnic Point that had been identified for cutting/trimming.
This was being done for smooth passage of metro material to the car shed, read the notices.
A couple of activists who had rushed to the site were detained at the Vanrai police station.
