MUMBAI: A 29-year-old advocate who was helping a 16-year-old girl with legal proceedings related to a lost “voter ID card” has been convicted and sentenced to three years in jail for molesting her in 2014, and fined Rs 6,000. The accused was out on bail.
The court said the accused had caused her tremendous trauma. “It is the duty of the court to impose proper punishment depending on the degree of criminality for imposing such punishment. The record reveals that “the accused said to the witness tumhari ladki mujhe chahiye (I want your daughter)”, and then moved his hand.. By the said act of accused, prosecution witness (minor) felt unsafe and cried. The accused has thus caused tremendous trauma to her..,” the court said.
The court said the fine amount is to be paid to the minor after the appeal period ends. At the time of the sentencing, the accused denied the allegations saying he was falsely implicated.
(The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
