Mumbai: Domestic LPG up Rs 50 in fourth hike since March 22 – Times of India

This is the fourth hike since March 22-cumulatively amounting to Rs 153.50.

MUMBAI: Domestic gas cylinders will cost more as LPG price was hiked by Rs 50 per unit from Wednesday onwards. This will increase the burden on lakhs of consumers across the Mumbai region.
The price of a 14.2 kg cylinder has been hiked to Rs 1,052.50 in the city. This is the fourth hike since March 22-cumulatively amounting to Rs 153.50.
However, the rate of commercial LPG has been cut by Rs 8.50 per unit. Te 19-kg cylinder will now cost Rs 1,972.50 against Rs 1,981 earlier. Hoteliers welcomed the move, saying previous hikes and costlier vegetables and cooking oil had hit them badly.
Households hit hard by LPG price hike
The drop in commercial LPG prices in June and July has come as a huge relief to the hotel industry. Said a hotelier, “It is good news for us as it will reduce our operational expenses to some extent. A week ago, the oil marketing companies announced a huge price cut for the commercial LPG cylinder by around Rs 200 per unit. The price had then dropped to Rs 1,981 per unit and this has gone down further on Wednesday.”
While hoteliers are upbeat, homemakers are upset with the rising prices of cooking gas. “This is unfair. In the past year, the price has gone up by around Rs 200 per cylinder and this has hit our monthly household expenses,” said Charmi Shah, a housewife from Mulund.
In May this year, political parties like Congress had hit the streets protesting against rising LPG prices which had touched Rs 1,000 per cylinder. “We are constantly protesting against inflation, and will oppose this huge hike in LPG rates in recent months,” said Mumbai Congress senior vice-president Ganesh Yadav.
