MUMBAI: Dreaded murder convict Azam Aslam Butt, who had jumped parole after being released during the lockdown, has been arrested by the Oshiwara police in Mumbai.
Butt has a lengthy criminal record with 11 past offences, including charges of cheating, intimidation and assault.
According to the police, Butt (47), had been accused of killing a suburban resident Kashinath Gharat in 2005.
Oshiwara police slapped charges on him. A sessions court sentenced him to life imprisonment in 2014 and he was lodged in the Nagpur Central Prison.
After the state government announced parole in view of the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020, Butt got out of prison. But he subsequently jumped parole and did not report back to the prison.
A fresh case was registered against him for jumping parole.
Butt used to live at Vile Parle. The Oshiwara police made inquiries and through their informants, tracked down Butt’s location not far from his residence. He has been arrested.
