Mumbai: BMC imposes 10% water cut starting June 27 – Times of India

Mumbaikars will have to face a 10% water cut starting June 27, announced the BMC on Friday.

MUMBAI: Mumbaikars will have to face a 10% water cut starting June 27, announced the BMC on Friday.
This is owing to inadequate rainfall in catchment area lakes in the month of June and also existing water stocks in them dropping below 10%.
BMC said that in June 2022, there was inadequate rainfall in the catchment areas of lakes which supply to Mumbai’s needs. Every day around 3800 million litres of water is supplied from these seven lakes.
BMC said that the June rainfall has been about 70% less than the average rainfall in the previous year.
As on June 24, the useful water stocks in the lakes is 9.77% of overall useful stock of 14 lakh million litres.
“This water stock is much less than previous years. If this situation continues, utilization of available water stock at an early date can affect Mumbai’s water supply adversely. Therefore, till the rainfall improves, it is decided to impose 10% water cut from June 27 in Mumbai. This water cut is also applicable to Thane, Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation and other villages who receive water supply from BMC,” said BMC.
BMC has requested citizens to use water judiciously and extend necessary co-operation during this period.
The percentage of water supplied by the seven lakes shows that the maximum percentage of water comes from Bhatsa–48% while Tulsi and Vihar provide for around 1- 2% of the city’s needs, Middle Vaitarna around 12%, Modak Sagar 11%, Tansa 10% and Upper Vaitarna 16%.
Meanwhile the IMD in its forecast for the weekend has said that generally cloudy skies with moderate rain in city and suburbs can be expected. The IMD has also forecast possibility of heavy rain at isolated places.
