Drinking water stocks dip below 10% in Mumbai, can last for 38 days: BMC – Times of India

The total required stocks is 14.47 lakh million litres by October 1 for Mumbai to go without a water cut for the rest of the year.

MUMBAI: With no heavy rainfall yet over the catchment area lakes that supply potable water to the city, the total water stocks have dropped to below 10% of the required quantum, according to the BMC data.
With the municipal body supplying 3,750 million litres of water daily to Mumbaikars, the existing stocks of 1.43 lakh million litres or 9.89% in the seven lakes as of Wednesday would suffice for around 38 days. Last June, the total water stocks were over 2 lakh million litres or nearly 15%.
The total required stocks is 14.47 lakh million litres by October 1 for Mumbai to go without a water cut for the rest of the year.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) declared the onset of south-west monsoon in Mumbai on June 11, but since then there has not been any heavy, continuous rain spell, especially over the lake catchment areas.
According to the BMC data, the smaller Tulsi and Vihar lakes have recorded 250mm and 231mm rainfall, respectively, since June 11. Of the five bigger lakes Tansa received 113mm of rainfall since the onset of monsoon, Modak Sagar 92mm, Bhatsa 83mm, Middle Vaitarna 65mm, and Upper Vaitarna 40mm.
Of the seven lakes, the maximum percentage of water is supplied by Bhatsa (48%). Tulsi and Vihar provide for around 2% of the city’s drinking water needs, Upper Vaitarna 16%, Middle Vaitarna 12%, Modak Sagar 11%, and Tansa 10%.
BMC officials are hopeful that rain activity will pick up pace in the lake catchment areas, but there is no heavy rain forecast for the coming days. In its five-day forecast the IMD has said that Mumbai can expect cloudy skies with moderate rainfall and the possibility of heavy rains at isolated places.
In the 24-hour period ending 8.30am on Wednesday, the IMD Colaba observatory recorded 16.8mm rainfall and the IMD Santacruz observatory 16.4mm. The total rainfall recorded this monsoon so far in Colaba and Santacruz is 291mm and 179mm, respectively.
