The number of Covid patients requiring hospital admission is rising steadily, climbing from 29 on June 1 to 110 admissions on Friday.
BMC’s daily Covid update on Friday said there are 569 patients admitted in various hospitals at the moment. Civic doctors are not worried since the number is less than 5% of all positive cases. As cases rise, the doctors said hospitalisation of vulnerable patients with underlying diseases is bound to go up.
At KEM Hospital, which used to get the most critical patients during the two waves, there are 15 patients. “No one is on a ventilator or severely ill,” said dean Dr Sangeeta Rawat. There are 27 patients at Hinduja Hospital in Mahim. “We are getting new admissions for ward and ICU,” said COO Joy Chakraborthy.
There are two patients in the ICU at Fortis Hospital, Mulund. “Both are incidental admissions who had come to hospital with another ailment but tested positive for Covid,” said ICU director Dr Rahul Pandit, a member of the state’s Covid task force.
The BKC jumbo, which restarted four days ago, has 55 patients. “We have been getting 10 to 15 patients daily and only 5% need oxygen,” said dean Dr Rajesh Dere.
As Omicron is still the main variant, doctors don’t expect severe disease. “None of the patients has lung involvement,” said Dr Gautam Bhansali of Bombay Hospital, which has 8 patients.
