Tardeo to get Mumbai’s first two-wheeler simulator to train bikers – Times of India

The simulator has been sponsored by United Way Mumbai, a non-profit, whose volunteers will also impart training and ensure that bikers follow safe riding practices.

MUMBAI: Maharashtra transport commissioner Avinash Dhakne will launch the Mumbai’s first simulator for two wheeler riders at Tardeo RTO on Friday.
The simulator has been sponsored by United Way Mumbai, a non-profit, whose volunteers will also impart training and ensure that bikers follow safe riding practices.
Regional transport officer Bharat Kalaskar said that in Mumbai, 47% fatalities in 2020 were of two wheeler riders, and there was need to discipline and train riders. Those arriving for new two-wheeler licences will first have to go through the simulator before appearing for the road test. Tardeo RTO also has two simulators for cars. It also has a special road safety cell in RTO premises wherein citizens are imparted lessons in safe driving skills. Every day, as many as 900 citizens arrive for the permanent driving tests for two and four-wheelers.
UWM vice president (community impact) Ajay Govale said: “The current licensing systems in the country are unable to assess the skill and quality of the two-wheeler riders adequately. Hence we are using a simulator for training two-wheeler riding.” The simulator tests their skills in a safe and supervised environment. A printed assessment of their riding skills and gaps is shared on completing this exercise.
The training has been conducted recently for over 13,000 youth in Pune, Silvassa, Nashik, Igatpuri, Chennai, Zaheerabad, Haridwar and Bengaluru. The sessions involved theoretical and practical guidance to potential two-wheeler riders to mitigate the issue.
After Tardeo, a bike simulator will be installed at Andheri RTO in western suburbs, sources added.
