MUMBAI: Several parts of Mumbai witnessed rain activity on Thursday morning with low-lying areas of Kurla witnessing flooding as well. Thane witnessed rain activity throughout the day. The IMD has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar from Sunday with heavy rain forecast at isolated places.
This comes after an onset that was declared on June 11 following two days of pre-monsoon activity. Since the onset that was declared, Mumbai and its adjacent areas did not witness any heavy rain activity.
In the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Thursday, IMD’s Colaba and Santacruz observatories recorded 18 mm & 11.7 mm of rainfall.
Sushma Nair, scientist, IMD Mumbai, said that in the wake of active monsoon conditions, rainfall activity over Konkan and adjoining ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra is expected to gradually increase from June 18. “Widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is expected over the region during the period,” she said.
The weather bureau has also issued a warning for fishermen and has advised them against venturing out into the sea on June 20. “Squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely to prevail along and off North Maharashtra coast on June 20. Fishermen are advised not to venture along and off North Maharashtra coast during above mentioned period,” stated the IMD bulletin.
In the impact expected, IMD has said localised inundation/flooding of low-lying areas and urban areas, disruption of traffic due to waterlogging on roads, disruption to road, rail, air and ferry transport and occasional gusty winds with speed reaching 40-50 gusting to 60 kmph along and off the coast, resulting in possibility of damage to vulnerable /temporary structures is expected.
