Borivli-Goregaon belt reports fastest Covid spike in Mumbai – Times of India

BMC officials have said they are closely monitoring the cases and there appears to be no reaso for worry yet.

MUMBAI: A ward-wise break-up of rising Covid cases shows that areas in the western suburbs are observing a faster spike than others.
The belt between Borivli and Goregaon has seen an over 150% increase in positive cases over a 14-day period, if data from the last two weeks of May are compared. Local residents attribute the rise in cases to the vacation period in May which saw many travel in and out of the city.
BMC officials, though, said they are observing the situation closely and there is no reason for concern yet, considering that a majority of cases are asymptomatic.
The BMC, which compared Covid case data of the weeks May 18-24 and May 25-31 found that the R-Central Ward (Borivli) saw cases rise from 13 to 62 during the period while the R-South Ward (Kandivli) which had 30 cases saw the numbers spiral to 78. P-South Ward (Goregaon) saw cases rise from 53 to 134.
Vidyarthi Singh, former BJP corporator from Borivli, said he sticks to wearing face masks in public.
“After having spent over two weeks in the intensive cae unit (ICU) following a Covid infection, I am careful but people had become very lax now,” said Singh.
BMC officials have said they are closely monitoring the cases and there appears to be no reaso for worry yet.
“While there is a rise in cases, there has not been any spike in the demand for hospital beds. Till that happens, I do not think it is a reason for concern,” said a ward level civic official.
Sandeep Patel, another former corporator from Goregaon, said owing to the holiday season in May, many people were seen moving about in public places, and in and out of the city.
There were large crowds and people socialised without masks.
“People were in a holiday mood and one hardly saw anyone wearing a mask too. With everything from restaurants to theatres now open, crowds are seen everywhere. While there may be a surge in cases, as most are asymptomatic, people also were not worried,” said Patel.
