Daily peak power load around 4 pm in Mumbai, reduce use of ACs during this time: Experts – Times of India

MUMBAI : Power utility companies and experts said that the peak electricity load has been the highest between 3 pm and 5 pm daily — with a maximum load of 3,850 MW recorded in Mumbai lately.
They have appealed to nearly 50 lakh consumers in the city to conserve energy during this period, particularly at 4 pm.
Said power analyst Ashok Pendse, “Bringing down peak load will also reduce strain on the transmission network which wheels in over 2200 MW of electricity to Mumbai daily. Any impact on the transmission corridor can lead to outages, with maximum peak load warning being 4200 MW.”
He further said that if Mumbaikars reduce use of ACs and appliances around 4 pm, it will save us from any alarming situation. “The consumption is usually lower in comparison during other periods including morning and late evening hours,” he said.
As a preventive measure, an official from Adani Electricity suggested : “Always keep your AC at 24 degrees. This is an optimum temperature and every degree lesser than this leads to 5% additional consumption. Make sure you buy an energy efficient AC and get it serviced regularly to make sure it is not consuming unnecessary electricity.”
Another tip provided by the official was to avoid wasteful use of energy — Keep windows and doors shut while your A/C is on. Do not keep opening the refrigerator door or leave it open for long durations.
A Tata Power official said: “We undertake a demand side management program through which energy efficient appliances like ACs, refrigerators, fans and LED tube lights are offered to consumers.” Such energy efficient lights and fans are offered by all power utility firms including BEST and MSEDCL.
A source from the energy department said: “We are witnessing unprecedented heat waves across several parts of India including Mumbai leading to increased temperature in March and April. This has resulted in an increase in power demand across all sections of consumers — residential, industrial or commercial. These trends are likely to continue and increase further in May.”
