WTC accident in Mumbai: Driver says he panicked, pressed accelerator – Times of India

MUMBAI: Mukesh Singh, 27, who rammed his employer’s car into three people and a taxi killing one and severely injuring three others near the World Trade Centre (WTC) in Cuffe Parade on Tuesday afternoon, was produced before a city court on Wednesday which remanded him to police custody till April 16.
The accused driver told the police that he panicked after hitting the first victim and pressed the accelerator instead of brakes, causing further damage.
Police said the driver was drunk and his blood sample will be sent for chemical analysis. While Prasenjit Dhadse (36), the head clerk of Navi Mumbai police commissionerate, died in the accident, two bankers – Nitesh Kumar Mandal (43), AGM Reserve Bank of India and Sujay Kumar Vishwas (35), assistant vice-president SBI Capital- and a car driver, Asif Shaikh, were seriously injured. “Mandal and Shaikh have been discharged from the hospital while Vishwas is responding to treatment and can talk. He will be operated upon,” said senior police inspector Sandesh Rewale.
Shaikh, 44, said, “I was returning after offering namaz with three other people. I was near the footpath when my friends were walking ahead. Suddenly, a speeding car hit me. I was flung into the air and fell on the road. The speeding car then went on hitting other persons and a taxi.”
Shaikh said that at the hospital he was asked to pay for the X-ray.
