Mumbai’s air quality drops to ‘very poor’ once again – Times of India

MUMBAI: After a long haul of pleasant weather since the dust storm-effect receded on January 26, Mumbai’s air quality turned ‘very poor’ on Sunday, with air quality index (AQI) hovering around 316. Delhi’s AQI (320) was only marginally worse. Interestingly, the AQI at Mazgaon was worse than Delhi, at 426 or ‘severe’.
This is unusual, since Mumbai’s proximity to the sea usually helps pollution disperse faster. Without the coastal breeze, experts say Mumbai’s AQI could well have been worse than Delhi’s on a regular basis.

On Sunday, the AQI at Colaba, Chembur and Andheri was also in the ‘very poor’ category. ‘Very poor’ AQI is said to be harmful for those indulging in outdoor exertion, especially the working class, as it can trigger respiratory diseases.
Several Mumbaikars had reported throat, chest and nasal congestion after the city’s AQI had crossed the 500-mark on January 24-25, the most severe indicator for air inside a human habitation. The January 25 pollution level is said to be a record in itself, as never had an AQI beyond 500 been reported in Mumbai.
